I don't mean by subject matter, I mean by the way that they talk.
The structure of their sentences, the syntax they use, how excited they are in posts, etc.

Some slang words seem gender specific, such as PWNED (male) or LOLZ/HUGGLEZ (female).

If no slang is used in a post, such as posts in the Intellectual Forum, I find it very difficult to distinguish gender.

I can also do this, but I'm wrong 10% of the time. Sometimes when a girl posts something like "is a white or black girl better in sex?", then I would think it's a guy. But you can never really tell, and that's LiveWire for you.

I dont think it is really possible without relying on gender stearotypes & cliches.... (use of reason= guy, use of empathy= girl)

add to that: you have 50% chance of guessing correctly,  you probably to have a reasonably low margin of error.

Should we conduct a wee experiment?   Get one Int. Forum members who is male and one who is female, get them to post an anonymous post on a subject and we determine which one is male and which one is not?

It will be harder because, assuming, a poster on the intellectual board would have a much learned style of writing than your regular LW poster.

Who's up for that?

I suppose you could say we have a different way of speaking or writing. I don't think I've ever consciously known what whoever's gender was until I looked, but I've never been surprised either... or at least, not very often.

Mm, it depends on the post.

When it comes to grammar and syntax, that tends to lean more towards being an age difference than a difference in gender. It really more comes out in tone. Girls tend to be a bit more willing to listen to the other side, and can sometimes actually change their positions on things over time. Guys tend to have a bit more of an "I'm right; you're not" tone to their posts.

Even that's somewhat a matter of age difference. I think you'll find some of the more mature guys are willing to change their positions, as long as they're in an environment where this is not considered a sign of weakness. But yes, I suppose males do have a more natural inclination towards competition.

I definatley can.

Just something about the grouping of the words is different, and the words themselves. Girls tend to use more words you don't really need to use such as like, so, anyways, etc.

I can't do this at all, but I'm impressed by people who can.

But then come to think of it, I've rarely been in a situation where I didn't know someone's gender anyway.

One great example was when one member of an online community I was with joined as a girl and convinced us for several months he was female. Even to the extent of flirting with other guys (I say flirting because I have no idea how far it went in private). When it all came out that he was in fact male, quite a few men were..... curiously quiet.

I mostly agree with this, more than subject matter or general tone of the post. Girls have more casual sentences while guys have more rigid ones (if both are well-written). Badly-written posts have their own differences but it's harder to tell for me.

Oh, I definitely agree with this post. Even when I'm writing formally I still tend to ramble and digress, even if I am being highly grammatical.
