I'm Black, and it pisses me off how little people know about Black culture, how negative what they know about it is, and how they don't want or care to correct their wrong beliefs. I'm doing a project on a book about the post-slavery era, and my group members are constantly walking on egg shells around me. They seriously expect me to to freak out at every turn. Newsflash: It offends me even MORE when you assume that I am the type of black person that is going to start screaming and pulling the race card. I am not, and you should know this by now. I'm a pretty quiet person. A guy in my group suggested we do something about black culture, and I was like "Well, yeah, that is a part of black culture. But we can't base black culture off of the slave era. It has some similarities, but it has since evolved from that". And he was like "Oh, okay." Then, some girl goes "Yeah, let's do the Soulja Boy". ........................................ .......................................... I was rendered speechless. I cannot even tell you how many times an ignorant comment like that has been thrown at me. A person said the same thing to me, when I mentioned that we had a cook out at my church. She asked "So, what do you guys do? Like, the Soulja Boy all day?" It just bothers me that say, if I asked about Asian or Hispanic culture, people might be able to name a few things. Maybe they are correct, maybe they aren't, but at least they aren't negative. Whereas if I were to ask someone about Black culture, they'd mumble about Martin Luther King, Soulja Boy, hip hop, and crime.

Some people are completely clueless. Don't worry about it, it's a thing called ignorance. People like stereotyping and I honestly don't think it's fair either.

Same here. Which is probably why your friends are treading on egg shells. Don't be offended by it.
But I am offended, because I know these people, and have known them for a while. It's not like we just met yesterday. I have never, ever tried to "beat someone's ass", raised my voice, or even looked like I was going to get violent. I make black jokes all the time, because frankly, I find stereotypes hilarious. Would it kill them to ask me, if I had anything in particular to share/contribute to this project without just assuming? edit: Many white people I know are clones of Paris Hilton. I guess they call them "preps". Their sentences are sprinkled with "omg", and "like". So, I should just avoid them, and think of them as bimbos? They shouldn't be offended by that? I don't get why everyone gets so miffed about this kind of stereotyping. Fuck, people have misconceptions, it happens. You guys throw around words like ignorance and the like when it's completely off base. Ignorance is the unwillingness to learn and blatant disregard of fact despite evidence to the contrary. Just because someone doesn't know everything about black culture, or even how to deal with normal black people (I mean the ones that don't play out the hip-hop stereotype) doesn't make them ignorant, just misinformed. So instead of bitching about it, and lumping every poor kid that's ever had a misconception as an ignorant asshat, do some informing.
