Yes, you can. You can purchase an unlocked phone. You can buy it through eBay or I believe you can even purchase an unlocked phone through your service provider. The only way that your contract would be renewed is if you upgrade your phone. However, if you're willing to pay the full price for an unlocked phone, you can easily get a new phone with no strings attached. Keep in mind that purchasing unlocked phones are extremely expensive. For example, I have recently purchased a new Nokia 5310. If I were to buy the phone completely unlocked, it would have cost around $289 + applicable taxes. If I were to upgrade my current phone, it would have only cost me $179. However, if you purchase the phone with a contract, the cost will be significantly lower because you are signing a pact with the company for a specific period of time.
