can some1 just describe to me what you get out of this, whats wrong with it, what it is basically, what are the "initiations", just a general idea of what it is. i don't think i would even join on but i just started college and i am wondering

In my freshman year I had invitations from 9 different fraternities. I chose none of them because I wasn't there to party. I was there to study, earn high grades and get into med school. I made it but I doubt it would have happened if I had joined any of them. I know my limitations and I am easily distracted. Two beers, one hard or 2 glass of wine are my limit and I walk away. Never met anyone drunk that I wanted to be around.
So, I made the right choice for me. There are many guys that belong to a fraternity that do just fine. I would not be one of them. When I have spare time I do volunteer work or hike, run, ride bike or play tennis. Much more rewarding in my opinion.

Initiations are just there for weeding out the week and to have a sense of brotherhood...to choose people that will share same goals....
