My mom found out last night that I've had suicidal thoughts so she's taking me to a psychiatrist today and I really don't want to go.  I don't want to talk to anyone b/c I'm a really shy person.  Any advice?

Wow...I'm sorry it happened like that.  But I'm glad that you're gonna be going. Tell me how it goes/went.

Just try to be open minded about it. At least your mom cares enough to take you.
I disagree. It's a cop out on her part because she's too scared to be compassionate herself.

To the OP, do not go if you don't want to. If you have to lie to get out of it, I'd recommend that too. It's hard to find someone to talk to, but if you talk to any 'professional' (psychologist, even) I would recommend against mentioning suicidal thoughts. They view this as a pathology most of the time and freak out about it because of the liability laws.

Most likely you will be prescribed drugs and diagnosed with a few bullshit 'disorders'. If you think you have emotional problems, take some time to think it through and find out the causes. Once you've got that down, work on the causes one at a time. Don't label yourself, and avoid psychiatrists and psychiatry like the plague.

Here's how I see it: Use this as an oppurtunity. I know exactly what you feel like, I'm way too shy to actually get up and go to a psych myself. But you have your mom taking you, and that may actually be a good thing. At least give this a shot, it honestly can't and won't hurt.

I'm totally against therapy. I personally just think it's unnecessary. I'm not saying that there aren't people who find it beneficial, I'm just saying that it definitely wasn't for me. So if you're like me and don't want to be in that room being analyzed then I say just don't give the shrink what he/she wants. He/she will ask you questions and you just say, "I don't want to talk about it." They will discontinue the therapy if they see you're not gonna talk.

go..it will help...the psychiatrist will find a way to understand you even if you find it hard to talk...trust me, they find a way to relate to you and to help you ome out of your shell. plus it helps to know that this person doesnt know anyone that you do and they are never going to tell anyone what you say, so you can feel free to talk about anywthing with out getting judged, or without being afraid that someone will find out

When I was suicidal in highschool, I had to see a therapist too. I too, was shy, but talking with her over the months helped me overcome the suicidal thoughts.
And your mom's only doing it because she cares, which you probably have heard already.

Just talk to them, they're usually really, really nice. You might surprise yourself and not want to leave when they have to.

Lots of shy people seek psychiatric help. It's not going to be like regular social interaction. They'll be experienced with timid teenagers and will be completely non-threatening. It's really nothing to worry about.
