Just use some regular websites (not sure who you should use for US events, though - I'm a Brit and I use the BBC). You could also try going to the library to find out how to send off for back issues of newspapers. They might even have some there - libraries often do. Or talk to friends and family who've been in the country and who follow current affairs. Get them to tell you what's been going on, then look it up online.
