OMG it's such a new thing and America is definetely the only country that's ever done it and is doing it in modern times right?

OMG and we aren't like even in a war right now where we could use information gained from torture.

OMG and it's like Habeus Corpus totally applies to military affairs in foreign lands.

OMG OMG OMG let's all freak out and be a bunch of whackjobs!

Torture on terrorists work, talk and persuasion does not.

Unfortunately its the most effective way.

Lol, again, to Telomere, Medjai, and Aim, torture happens all over the world. It's not based on what we WANT, it's based on what IS. Torture will never completely stop, and honestly, if there was torture from a foreign nation here, I'd hate their guts, but I wouldn't expect them to hate their government for doing it. It's war. Get over it.

So you meant to tell us that torture exists? How meaningful...

That to stop bitching about it because it always will, and just because we are a moral nation, does not mean we should wage a "moral war" it doesn't work that way, because we will not be given the same courtesy, and then more soldiers die.

You say to stop bitching.  Aimforhead attempted to show you an upset to that defetist attitude.  not to mention the day people stop caring about what their government does will be the death of any 'represenatative' government at all.

Torture is also a matter of civil and human rights.

Civil is having to do with one's own nation, not foreign.

That's why we get slaves from Africa, obviously.  Enslaving our own people would just be stupid.

The Last Magister Posted at 6:16 pm on Nov. 28, 2008
A. and it is immoral, but not useless. Also, again, morals don't work with survival. Morals are a luxury.
The Samsoniteman Posted at 5:53 pm on Nov. 28, 2008
Hey TheLastMagister, guess who is authorising the torture at Gitmo and god knows elsewhere? Guess who can stop that very same torture?

Are these (a) the same or (b) different people?

Extra credit is available if you manage to work out why torture is immoral and largely useless.

Any US Military installation is considered US Soil. If for instance, you were born on a military base in Iraq, you'd be considered to have been born on American soil.

Anything our troops DO must fall under the geneva conventions, and the rule of our own law, regardless of where they are they are american soldiers and therefore subject to follow the rules of habeus corpus regardless.

The justice system agrees with me.

The Last Magister Posted at 5:43 pm on Nov. 28, 2008
Yes I am, and I am saying that Habeus Corpus can be suspended, and those not on our soil are not entitled to our judicial system.
medjai Posted at 5:41 pm on Nov. 28, 2008
What we allow our government to do in foreign lands is still a civil affair, because it's our government doing it. It's our internal law allowing it.

Everyone is entitled to Habeus Corpus, not just citizens. All "people", are you familiar with the founding of this nation?

Except for the simple fact that slavery is a civil matter and not the same as torture in foreign lands.
telomere13 Posted at 4:32 pm on Nov. 28, 2008

OMG slavery is such a new thing and America is definetely the only country that's ever done it in modern times right?

OMG and we aren't like even in a war right now where we could use slave labor.

Really, though, if humanity doesn't change, we might as well argue that slavery is OK to do in the United States because we're not going to be able to completely get rid of it and it was accepted for a long time.

Your family life was not worse than torture unless you lived in a small cage and had no communication with the outside world, no school, and were regularly tortured (not just beat) by your family.

Being forced to watch someone slice through the center of your penis = more traumatizing than a mean daddy who made you feel bad about yourself
