| Sinkholes are simple to explain: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sinkhole The Texas one is large for a obvious reason: that entire area has huge areas where oil was extracted. Over time as water flows into this areas, the supporting soil is eroded. As this occurs, eventually a hole will open. |

| Oil caused this. They took out oil from underground, thereby leaving a big hole. |

| Are you talking about the one in Wink? I think it has stopped...mostly shallow wells that collapse cause them... I haven't heard of any others, though... |
