I understand triggers, i understand the events that make a person cut---anger, depression, control and so forth, but i don't understand the cravings. The wave that hits you out of no where, like a tickle at the back of your neck that leaves you feeling desperate for a rb, the thing that tells you it will make it all better, even if nothing seems wrong...A trigger is something i can control or avoid, but a craving is something that just leaves me helpless and shaking...

Does anyone else understand what i'm talking about and if so, how do you deal with it?

This is not a big problem. a good psychiatrist will take care of this in a very short time. rather than taking advise on this forum, consult a specialist. will you ask for advice on this forum if you get fever? you would talk to a Doctor. Do the same.

ya i know wut u mean. anything can trigger emotions like that really. most of the time thery are triggered by events that remind you of some bad time that happened in the past. a experience that you dnt want ot be in again. most people cut for attion. but there are those out there that do it because they really dont want to live. or because its a way for them to releve stress. when you inflict pain upon yourself weather your doing it yourself or u injure youself your body sends out chemicals to help relieve the pain. dopamine is one of those chemicals. dopamine is a "feel good" chemical. it is used in many drugs adn can be very addicting. This can also hellp explain y people who get tattos will sometimes say that its addicting and are constantly wanting to get more tattos. its the pain the needle sends into there body and the chemicals released by the body (dopamine) to help control the pain that is so addicting. this is y cutters find relief in cutting themselves. because its not only the pain getting there mind off things but also the chemicals the brain send out to help relieve the pain that  creates the "feel good" feeling.

what the hell are you getting at?

Cutting yourself is just plain stupid

basically it is. 4 most kids its just a way of gettin attention. its retarded. and ive lost a friend 2 it. it pisses me off so much 2 hear kids saying they cut bc they are depressed. even though mommy and daddy buy them all their clothes. let them do w/e. y the hell are they depressed. it makes no fucking sense. im not the richest person and im not depressed or cutting or ne thing. im just living.

Your opinion really irritates me. I know that we are all entitled to our own opinion but there are things that you don't see on the surface that are eating these kids alive inside. So what if their parents buy their clothes and let them do whatever. Kids want rules even though they don't act like it. They want to know that their parents care enough to tell them not to do all the stupid shit that kids are out there doing. That is besides the point. As for being rich, that has nothing to do with depression. Someone who gets everything they want physically or materially is longing for something real, some kind of emotion instead of just getting material things. We as humans long for the touch and emotional care that we all deserve. Buying a gift isn't going to change that and neither is getting whatever you want. Anyways... If you are so ignorant that you can't see why kids are depressed then maybe you should look a little closer. Try listening to one for a change and maybe you would actually hear what they are saying... Read between the lines.

It depends how bad it is.  Simple cravings that are new or not overwhelming are controlled by distractive and substitutive behaviors (finding something specific to do when a craving arises).  It's the same with any addiction.  You try to find something else to do at that moment.  When you feel a craving to cut, try brushing your hair or your teeth, or try putting lotion on your arms instead of cutting them.

It's a behavior modification, which isn't easy, but it can be done.  If it gets to be beyond your control or dangerous, medical assistance is the way to go.  If you can't modify your behavior, you may need medications to assist.

I can't comment on the original question about cutting at the moment but I do think the only stupid people around here are the ones who are posting ignorant responses. They outdo everyone around them by replying to this thread "u are messed up".

It's not her who's cutting, and have some understanding, and respect. Talk about it in an objective manner.

In all fairness i must clarify, i would very much like objective answers but i was not asking because i lacked a general understanding of the matter, i was asking because i have trouble fighting the cravings to cut and was begging for any advice concerning that...but i thankyou for your defense of the matter

damn, you're good at this peer support thing, reading your comments are just as tolerable as getting stabbed in the eye with a stick...

It appears that the OP was asking for objective info.  I didn't read in there where SHE is cutting, she was trying to understand why, and comparing it to other "cravings" or addictions.

From what I've seen, it's more than simple attention-getting in the pathological state.  It becomes an addiction, which is physiological and needs treatment.

They erased the topic so I don't know what it said. But cutting yourself isn't always for attention. If you want a chat feel free to PM me.

I've felt that b4. I just tried to write what i'm feeling or draw. Anything that i like. Or I would sit somewhere dark and breath deep and tell myself that i don't need it. If that doesn't work just snap a rubber band. That way ur not cutting but it still stings.

i dont think that you should cut yourself. i think there are much better ways to relieve stress than by cutting yourself.
