Is getting into the school that you actually want really easier after spending a year at a local, commuter college? I'm planning to transfer to Elon University after one year at another school where I live but I'm just curious to see if it would be worth trying..

It's possible.  If you didn't have a good enough highschool transcript, something like a junior college or the like is your chance to fix that up.  You have to make sure you do a good job, and likewise, make sure you take classes that you can transfer to you other school.  If you do want to go ahead and transfer, then you should definitely talk to a counsellor and make sure you take the right courses.  They may even have a transfer agreement policy (but not necessarily).

I know in California, MANY people go to a two year college and than transfer into a good 4 year one.
