My friend just got a new apartment off campus this semester, the first time she's lived away from the dorms.  She's a junior and she got a place with 2 of her other friends (her best friend and this other girl they are kinda close).

After I asked how everything was going, she sent me this email... And it's concerning casue I think her roommates are gonna have a looot of problems...

"Umm, utilities are not provided in my apartment so my roomies and I had to set up utilities on our own. So I set up ALL! the utilities under my name so that I knew they would get done. So I waited until I was up at school to do internet. (Kind of hoping my roomies would help out and take on some of the responibilities.) So I kept hinting and hinting and they still didn't do anything and when I called Sept. 17th was thesoonest they could come. It kinda blows but it's okay. The thing that has been pissing me off is the fact that my roomies have been complaining about the lack of internet when they could have done and it (heaven forbid taking care of one utility when I'm in charge of 5). I don't know I get it next Wed. so that will be nice."

In your opinion, if you live off campus and have housemates, do you think what my friend is doing is right?  I personally see this as a disaster because she's not communicating..and it could possibly be bad.

Do you agree that this might cause big problems in the future?  Whoever has had experience, I would like to hear...

yea, she made a bad move by pulling all the bills in her name. She can get royally screwed over if the other girls choose not to pay, she will be responsible for the balance.

Esh, never put the bills in your name. I know one guy who house-shared with four other guys and he ended up having to pay for 3/5 of the bills because it was all in his name and nobody else coughed up.

She needs to sort out a way for them to pay their bills. When a bill comes through, maybe they should sit down and the other girls should be made to write cheques for their share right there and then.

Your friend should take a note of who has/hasn't paid, and then it can hopefully get sorted more easily. Like if someone can't pay one month, the money can be added on to the next months' total etc.
