He hasn't done anything wrong to you. Treat him with the respect that he deserves from you. That doesn't mean go into detail. That will likely only hurt his feelings more and there's no reason for that. Instead, I would just tell him that you ran into your ex. And that you realized that you still have feelings for him. So it isn't fair to anyone for you to continue seeing him romantically when you know you have much stronger feelings for your ex. If you and your ex end up together, this guy will find out. So lying will only hurt him in the long run. Be honest, your heart can't be in two relationships. And you know who you want to be with.
