He took major offense to it and now he thinks less of me and is really pissed at me.   I'm a fucking idiot.       He won't even talk to me.

Maybe you should just wait it out, give him a little time to cool down, and then explain everything to him.        Oh I explained how I felt for an hour...went for a cigarette because he had me all shook up and he's gone offline. I know you're stressed, but if you keep thinking about it and worrying about what might happen, you're just going to stress out even more. Do anything that relaxes you and just quit thinking for now.
