I know how the theory works in practicality, but I don't know things like how new features are created with no precedent, or why multiple generations come up with identical new genes. I was never taught Evolution in school, thanks to the good 'ol academics of Florida. That's sad.

It is not that we share a common ancestor simply because there are genetic similarities, but that the genetic similarities, differences and the pattern that emerges when studying this is in such a way that only universal common descent can explain this. You dont need to think we came from monkeys to know that evolution is FACT. That is just one side of evolution. Nobody who has had a decent education in biology would ever claim that we "evolved from monkeys." Those words are words spoken by those who don't know any better but want to be offended anyway. I was not claiming that we evolved from monkeys.
