when we are in our mothers uterus we have gills for a while, some babies are born with there feet fused together like this:

There are also people near Thailand etc that have adapted to the water environment that live mostly in the ocean.
The city of Atlantis may still of had people in it while it sunk, sailors have seen *mermaids* in places that do not have other sea creatures that look like mermaids. so who's to say that mermaids could not have or do not exist?, they could.
maybe not exactly like the fairytale but who knows?
