However, he's never made any mention about me getting paid for it. Should I assume he is? Should I just bluntly ask him, "Am I getting paid for this?" He doesn't want a simple website, he's telling me to make him a custom Joomla template with different backgrounds and all this. The other problem is--he's my friend so I can't just say, "Fuck off!" So how can I say it politely? Or do I not?

That is a fuck ton of work, and you should ask about compensation. One thing you can do is bring it up as if it was expected. Ask him what he thinks a fair price for this sort of thing is? You should always be charging for your skills. My grandfather died recently, we have a great family friend who is giving us legal advice in reference to wills and inheritances. But we are paying him. This is his profession and his livelihood. You should really be asking him about this. Talk with your mother, too. Ask her to give her take on the situation. Is this someone from the internet or real life? If your mother knows him, she may know if he's trying to take advantage of you. Feel free to instant message me, or whatever in regards to this.
