It does this by physically reorganizing the contents of the disk to store the pieces of each file close together and contiguously. It also attempts to create larger regions of free space using compaction to impede the return of fragmentation. Basically, What a Defrag does is organise everything in your pc and makes it more methodical for the processor and the HDD itself to find. Imagine a game of tetris, With blocks randomly placed everywhere. Theres gunna be gaps, But if you sort them all out, Theres no gaps, And probably a lot more space.
