I'm getting a MacBook in a couple of days. But I'll be sad to leave my 7000 song library on my PC behind. How can I go about transferring all my MP3s to my Mac, ideally without having to buy anything?

invest in an external hard drive. they're reasonably priced

You can purchase a cable which will turn your hard drive into an external drive.  It should cost about 5-10 bucks.  One end plugs into the port on the hard drive, the other is a usb end for your computer.  That way you can just drag and drop your files.

If you have an iPod, and it's through iTunes, use Senuti. It's really easy, and comes with all the song info.

Be careful though, and read all the instructions, or you might erase all your songs from your ipod.

Do it through a network. Set up your. Goto the folder you keep your music in on your PC and right-click on it, then share it. Then assuming your Mac is on the same network, you should be able to goto network in Finder and your PC should be there along with all your shares.

Put songs onto a disk, flash drive or external hard drive. If you're savvy enough you can just turn your PCs hard drive into an external.

So I'll probably just end up doing a thumb-drive transfer for 8 hours...

Network them, drag and drop.

If you have a USB drive or discs use those. If not, and you don't mind it taking days, transfer via a chat app or something. Or you could let your Mac access your PCs shared folders. Don't know if it works cross-platform though.

burn it to a disk (or a couple of disks).

it will take a while, but if you really care about your music, then you'll do it.

Transfer it using AIM or some other messenger that features a file transfer system with no file size limits.
