I recommend LinuxMint. It's basically the same as Ubuntu, but with more video/audio codecs already installed, making it very easy to use for beginners. And it uses all the Ubuntu programs, so there is a wide variety of resources available.

Go with ArchLinux. You get to build it how you like, while learning Linux and keeping it simple. There's good documentation in their wiki and forums if you get confused. http://www.archlinux.org/

Ubuntu is pretty easy for new users. And in response to jamescoleman...the newest version of Ubuntu has support for ntfs without any addons. So if you have a dual boot computer with windows and a linux distro, you can access your windows files through ubuntu.

I'd defiantly start with Knoppix, it runs right off the CD so you don't have to go through the install which can be a bitch if you've never done it before, plus you can't really screw anything up that bad.

linux is an operating system futuremodelcandance. try downloading suse linux, ubuntu, or slaxware (live cd versions). burn it to a cd from the .iso file. buy a linux book and read it. or you could go online and learn that way. everyone prefers a different distro of linux (i'm down with ubuntu ultimate and suse linux)

Start with Ubuntu and get a Knoppix live disc. Knoppix is really good.
