I have read so much comflicting information and I'm not sure now how many pics it will hold.

It depends on the resolution of the camera, as well as how the camera processes the information and how well it compresses the data into JPG, and the quality of the picture. My D40 estimates 281 photos, with one 6MP fine photo weighing at 3.4MB but a normal photo (still at 6MP) at 1.8MB (max capacity of ~534). In comparison a RAW image will be ~7.1MB in size maxing out capacity at 134 photos on a 1GB card. Alot of digital cameras have a little counter on the bottom corner that tells you how many more you can take. All 3 previous replies displayed.
