let's say my current phone breaks and I absolutely have to get a new one. I'm in the middle of a plan, so I won't get the "2 year activation" price or whatever, but do I have to pay full retail price for a phone? Or do I get any kind of discount?

The phone I have now is just one of those cheap camera phones that came free with the family plan. I'd like to get an enV 2, and I know they won't give it to me free or anything, but it would be nice to only have to pay the $129 activation price rather than the $399 full retail price.

If you dont have insurance, they will try to make you pay full retail.

Go to a Verizon store, and insist that you get a cheap phone for free, or a good phone for a decent price. My experience with Verizon is that they will charge you an arm and a leg, but they are also willing to negotiate some.

They might stick you with another year, or convince you to sign up for vCast or something, but you should be able to get a phone for cheap.
