It's like... with most other kinds of crime, the object is to gain something as in robbery(money), rape(sexual pleasure), terrorism(some political cause), and so on. Not very often is the intent simply to destroy someone else's shit who they don't even know. The criminal gets absolutely nothing out of it.

Especially someone who is smart enough to write a virus... what the fuck makes them want to do it? I can't fathom what goes in in their minds.

I can tell you what goes through some of their minds, seeing as I know a few who aspire to write viruses. For some people it is experimentation, for others they do it for the sake of doing it and just fuck up someones system, yes there are people who do it for that reason.

Ohh and most Anti-Virus companies hire people to write viruses for those companies, these type of people do it for the profit behind it. Most viruses, believe it or not are written by anti-virus software companies.

Now, most viruses are also coupled with keyloggers, etc.

And its more the "can I do this" than the malicious intent.

They wanna see how clever they are

they could have got sacked from an anti virus company :P

they could be employed by someone/company etc..

could just be a normal "job"

You don't know anything about crime or criminals. At all.

They just want to be a dick and ruin things for other people. They do it and feel all empowered.

It demonstrates their capabilities.

To who? When you get a virus you don't know who created it.
