sometimes it cuts in and out
other times it just stays off
but sometimes it appears as though it IS connected (the networking icon in the lower right) but refuses to connect saying stuff like "invalid AIM server address" when i try to get on aim and "firefox can't find the server"
and sometimes this lasts for awhile then itll go back to cutting in and out
the router lights appear normal and there's no trouble connecting when directly plugged into the modem
the comcast guy came and tested everything and said it was fine, do we need a new router or is there something else going on, because this is extremely frustrating
i contacted tech support and we found out that this laptop has a problem with the ethernet controller (not sure why) and he said that this could be causing probs with the whole network
is this true

I'm just curious. Turn off all of the tv's in your house and play with internet for a while and see how it works. all our tv's were off in our house while we were fiddling with it hmm, ok. Possibly borrow a friends modem or something and try it out. A new one is kind of a big purchase. Have you tried connecting the modem right to a computer? Comcast should be giving them a new modem. Call, complain, insist they send you a new one. Obviously you will send back the old one when the new one comes. Also, try actually disconnecting all the TVs/cable boxes. Even if they are off, they would still draw a signal. They are never truly off, they just go into a sleep like state. this IS the new one, we tried to get the old one but they'd have to cross the signals for the phone and internet since it used to be separate which would make it actually weaker

That still doesnt mean this one isnt defective. We had one with Verizon that would cut out every day about the same time because it was over heating. Got a new modem, worked fine.

However, I doubt thats it. Insist that they test the line, come in and see the problem, and if need be, replace the line entirely. There are so many things it could, from static on the line, to attenuation, a repeater that got taken off, etc. he checked the signal and tested everything and everything was fine Did he check it at the corner, or at the house? Are other devices in the house having connection problems, or only you? he checked both, and all computers in the house are having the same problem

Did he offer you a new modem? It could be that.
If they try a new modem, and you still have the same problem, its definitely the line.
Oh, and I was at my friends when they were having a similar problem (they wanted me to take a look at their computer, make sure it wasnt their computer) and Comcast sent a TV guy. He tested the line, and it came out fine, but when it still didnt work, he admitted that he would need to send another request in to get a guy out to test the internet connection. Not sure if that means anything to you or not.
They always say its fine, when its their fault. I'd probably scream at their cust service for awhile, until they actually do something to fix it. Its more than likely an ISP issue.

When he came out did he set your modem to send reports? They can make the modem send reports on activity every ten or fifteen minutes or so incase whatever is happening doesn't happen while he's around.
