is there a way to restore xp's settings to it's original state?    not with system restore..

ummmmmm...thats EXACTLY what system restore does.

your only other option is to put the XP cd in and do a repair install.
to do this do NOT choose the first repair option you see, at that screen choose install, then choose the SECOND repair option you see.
