See Me Now Posted at 7:06 pm on July 9, 2009
So, I've got Norton software protecting my computer, and  I need a smart persons help. My dad will be home soon, and he'll be able to fix it no prob, but I want some advice now. Basically, my anti-virus subscription is up, and I don't want to renew it, so every time it asks me to, I click "remind me later" because "I don't want your fucking software updates" isn't an option.

This screen will pop up every minute or so, saying "Security Center Alert!" and then a page that looks like the "my computer" page. Except it looks like the Windows 98 version, not vista, so it's not MY my computer page. It's trying to tell me there are like, 500 trogans on my computer.

Basically, I think the norton software is trying to scare me into buying it's product, and I dont want it. Is this possible?

Yes thats Norton trying to scare you into buying it, there aren't 500 trojans on your computer....if there was i don't think it would be running or if it was then very very very slowly.
So because I trust you more than the rest of these kids, what should I do? Because the norton software that does regular scans and fixes tracking cookies and stuff still works, it's just the virus scanner that has expired. Should I uninstall it for now? I REALLY don't think I actually have viruses or trogans, because it's not showing me MY my computer page, it's like... a separate program. If I click on a couple of things that pop up, it takes me to an internet web page and asks me to install some sketch file, which I obviously wont do....

but should I just wait for my dad?

The thing popping up is actually like pointed above an entirely new virus trying to get on your machine. Don't click on it. And i'd suggest you either wait for your dad or download Avast or AVG (Free anti-virus programs) and use those instead of Norton. Its what i have, just tell your dad about them.

But whatever you do don't click on the virus thingy and let it install.

ive had this virus dude... its not norton, its a virus called "anti-virus 2009" or something along those lines, aka, its disguesed as an anti-virus software, when it is not, p.s., again, it is NOT norton...
devilmaycrydude Posted at 7:09 pm on July 9, 2009
oh, dude i had the same exact problem, it's a virus called privacy center, it isint norton, you have to buy it for it to be erased and you should go se if you can uninstall it in add/unistall programs, trust me, if you had 500 trojans you'd know, it's the basic bully for money scam, the bully tells you to give him money so he won't hurt you. afterwards norton should quarantine it with the leftover protection stuff.

its not norton... it is a virus that was installed on your computer...

it will crash your computer if you dont do anything, install avg anti-virus free, and run a scan asap!!

germanygirl Posted at 7:08 pm on July 9, 2009
Uhh, no. It's a virus trying to get you to click on it to get more viruses. Scan the computer and get it fixed.

I've never had good luck with Norton. I deleted it and downloaded McAfee- which is free if you have Comcast internet.

Drop Norton and buy Panda Security.
