Hey i just downloaded Avast antivirus. It killed about 3 Trojans when i first put it on, but then i realised the cost.. It uses about 30mb of memory. Thats worse than norton, the useless piece of shit it is. Is there somewhere you can disable some of its features? Or does everybody just put up with its ridiculously high memory consumption?

Nice post Rhapsody, I agree, "Avast!" is, in my opinion, the best antivirus out, Norton is garbage, and Mcaffee is blind. If you say than Avast takes up 30 mb and are complaining, then mate, im afraid you have a shit pc.

I have and currently am using Avast and I don't find it to be a memory hog. When my computer's memory was 256 its was okay, I was actually able to run other programs while having Avast scanning, while with Norton it was a pain in the ass to run any other programs with that.

Almost nothing! what the hell are you talking about. This is an antivirus program, not the latest 3d shooter. The antivirus i was using prior to this was only using 8mb of ram. Not all of us have parents who buy us custom built machines with the latest and greatest tehnology.
I am running Xp Home with SP2, i have 384MB of ram. I dont need you to tell me i need more ram, unless your going to buy it for me.

My parents haven't paid for even the least expensive part in any of my pc's. Sort of. I built computers for both mom and dad and made them pay me enough to build the ones I play with.

Yes, it is possible.  Lower the scanning.  Or turn it off altogether and have it run only when you want it to.  That's your choice.

And, PS, you're right, "Not all of us have parents who buy us custom built machines with the latest and greatest tehnology."  I saved for 2 years to buy my computer and have hardly upgraded it since.  I got a wireless card to move it into my own room, and my brother gave me a video card for christmas, and said that I'm not getting anything else for 2 more.  So quit bitching.  If you don't want to spend the money on a good computer, don't expect one.

You did exactly what i said not to. There are a multitude of more important things i have to buy before i purchase computer components. All i want is for someone who uses this program, to tell me if its possible to make it more streamlined.

I know this isn't the latest 3D shooter, but it is still a major part of your computer. You want it to scan everything that moves on your computer, that comes at a price. If you are that desperate then turn off the auto protect or whatever the avast name for it is.

You don't need me to tell you you need more RAM. Well it seems you do need me to tell you. 384 is really not enough for XP. 512 should be considered a minimum now really. Especially if you have built in graphics....

30Meg is a very small foot print, just accept that is what you need for it to run, turn off auto protect or buy more RAM.

You cant expect to keep running current products on an old machine without upgrades.

And no, i will not buy you RAM.

I use firefox, its very secure. I also have a firewall if you were about to ask that, not that its related. How do you know you dont have any viruses if you have no virus scanner to tell you that.
pleaseremove Posted at 4:46 am on April 9, 2006
30Meg...that's almost nothing. What more do you want?

How much RAM do you have and what version of windows are you running?
