True, a streaming solution is one option. But what if both locations already have the media file on local storage, and want to play it back synchronously? VLC already has streaming features that could be taken advantage of.

@pleaseremove--Oh, so that's where they got that part from... A lot of that expression suite is just rebranded versions of other programs like Frontpage. Good find!

You'd have to set up streaming software... I think Microsoft Expression has something to do this, but you have to pay for it. (Unless you're in college or your high school is willing to sign up for free by clicking here) I'm pretty sure it's Expression Encoder. You can stream using some type of windows media player format. The only problem is that you will have to mess with firewall settings and port forwarding... If you have a mac, I think Quicktime Pro will let you stream media.
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/forpros/encoder/default.mspx They still have their free versions, although a couple of years old now, it does have these same features. |

I'm not aware of any software that can do this. The closest I can think of is some of the on-line collaboration tools that let you share screens and alike... but I dread to think how badly that would work. VLC does have steaming options to serve, so i guess you could stream from one machine, but I'm not sure how well the likes of pausing will work.

It's for casual use, and it's not something that I'd be prepared to do myself at all, I'm just wondering if this exists. I'd have thought that something like VLC may have had some kind of functionality like this built in.

Yes, there is a way, but I doubt software for this exists. It wouldn't be too hard to write the software, you just need to either issue play/pause/rew/ff commands from a central location, and so the command to play or pause is sent to both machines. How exact does it need to be? And what is this for?
