i want to browse through the files and click on say
"data.dat" and open it in a list box

I think there is a control in VB6 that allows you to do that. Its called something like FileBrowser or something. You will find it in the toolbox anyway. Can't remember how to use it though cause I haven't written in VB6 in years lol
