about turning the car off, apparently it saves gas if over 30 seconds. older cars waste gas doing this though

Sounds like the motor has lost some compression over time so its burning a bit more fuel and probly oil then it was designed to do. Have a compression check done on it and that should uncover something.

I don't understand why my Civic is getting less then 250 miles on a full tank of 12 gallons. I should be getting 350. =/
Drive slower, the best way to save fuel is when your taking off you drive slower or if you drive manual you change gears earlyier then normal.

and never turn your car off when your at a traffic light.

I do drive slowly, I don't floor it and it's an auto. I never turn off my car at a light, if I did and waited the extra second to start it up people would honk!

It's an older car, 96 with 150K miles on it. I took it to the Honda dealership and they checked it out but said everything was in working order. What's weird though is that I never had a fuel bobber bob up and down so much.

Yep, I think that's a HUGE mistake..

most cars use very little fuel at idle, so if you turn it off.. ok maybe you save a little fuel there but then you waste more in starting up your car.. not to mention you wear your cranking motor.

In Sweden I believe it is they require you to turn your car off when your stopping

I totally beat my record today

 The car:
 2002 Nissan Sentra 1.8

 specs that influence MPG:
126hp, ~2600lbs, 4spd auto, 195/60-14 tires, didn't use A/C (it's not really hot with all the storms now), I used 87 octane from Shell.

my average usually is 28mpg lately, 30mpg if I drive conservatively, and today I filled up and averaged 36mpg[/b[ for the first time.

 412 miles / 11.4 gallons

So you got 8 more MPG than my car (28mpg)... 4000lbs, 5.3L, 303hp, 4spd auto, 235/50-18 tires, A/C on and using 93 octane...

Somehow that just doesn't seem very impressive. I'll take my performance

Yeah but guess what, I can beat the living crap out of my car.. autocross it, rally it, simply keep my foot down all the time and still average about 25mpg..

In all fairness your car has got a massive torque advantage, but 28mpg is insane.
iconoclast Posted at 10:59 pm on June 27, 2008
28 mpg for that thing is pretty fucking good, holy crap
