Can't we all just get along?

Catherine Vogt, 14, is an Illinois 8th grader, the daughter of a liberal mom and a conservative dad. She wanted to conduct an experiment in political tolerance and diversity of opinion at her school in the liberal suburb of Oak Park.

She noticed that fellow students at Gwendolyn Brooks Middle School overwhelmingly supported Barack Obama for president. His campaign kept preaching "inclusion," and she decided to see how included she could be.

So just before the election, Catherine consulted with her history teacher, then bravely wore a unique T-shirt to school and recorded the comments of teachers and students in her journal. The T-shirt bore the simple yet quite subversive words drawn with a red marker:

"McCain Girl."

"I was just really curious how they'd react to something that different, because a lot of people at my school wore Obama shirts and they are big Obama supporters," Catherine told us. "I just really wanted to see what their reaction would be."

Immediately, Catherine learned she was stupid for wearing a shirt with Republican John McCain's name. Not merely stupid. Very stupid.

"People were upset. But they started saying things, calling me very stupid, telling me my shirt was stupid and I shouldn't be wearing it," Catherine said.

Then it got worse.

Maybe not, until you wear an Obama shirt.

So you admit that big bad mean republicans are intolerant?

  Good then we agree,

So you're agreeing that democrats are just as intolerant?

 Honestly, FA.

 OF COURSE WE ARE.

What is the reason for "2 years old"? Reading some of the other responses, I'd have to say some here are simply making excuses.

And rather than find the story a humorous or sad commentary, they attack me for posting it. That's kind of sad in itself.

Making fun of ppl who think Obama is the anti-christ. You gotta admit that's pretty lol, Except for ppl who REALLY think he is the anti-christ I guess.

She truly believes he is the anti-Christ; she said something along those lines in a message to me, that he would somehow bring the end to America. It's astounding, really. How much Hannity and Colmes can one watch?!

These are teenagers, good god.

I know what you're implying by this too, that Obama supporters are intolerant and shit. Well I wore my Obama shirt to school on election day and I live in a very CONSERVATIVE town and got harassed the whole day.

I am also 14, except I'm in high school not junior high.

I'm not implying anything. I just posted a news story.

Why waste our time? We all know that ignorance is abundant in all political parties. Why waste bandwidth just to push your agenda.

Should I create a topic just to post a new story like this?:

Cross burnings. Schoolchildren chanting "Assassinate Obama." Black figures hung from nooses. Racial epithets scrawled on homes and cars."

No, because it's not necessary.

However, attempting to state that Democrats are somehow nastier than Republicans is just absurd. Which campaign made absurd accusations about the opposing candidate's family, social life, religion, name and it's subsequent meaning, birthplace, and elementary education history?

Come on. Republicans have a HISTORY for denigrating whoever they are running against, whether it be a Democrat or a fellow Republican (see Bush vs. McCain in the 2000 primaries). You are too young to remember, and your parents/church is too biased to tell you, but John McCain once was a man of decency, running against a man who ran one of the most despicable campaigns of the last century (Bushy). See the 2004 election, where Republicans slammed Kerry on his service to his country, that he only won three purple hearts instead of four, even though George Bush never served and dodged the draft himself. It's despicable really, and even more disgraceful that you refuse to admit that your party has ever committed any wrongdoing. Please, get your head out of your ass.

Does it not tell you a lot about the intellectual level and bias of those who excuse the attitude because of the age of the participants (ignoring the fact that there were teachers that responded similarly)?

Out of curiosity, what is the intended purpose of this thread, FA?

I think it's obvious. To demonstrate that contrary to popular perception, Democrats their ilk are just as intolerant of dissident viewpoints as those big bad mean Republicans are.

Pretty much.

And read the second paragraph of the OP...
