I'm generally not very proud of Germany's history (huh...I wonder why), but sometimes there are times in history where you just wish you had been there to witness something truly great...for me that's November 9th, 1989...the night the Berlin Wall "fell."

My grandmother was there and she was telling me about how happy the people were...and afterwards I watched some video footage of it on-line...it seriously made me cry. It's amazing, the way people just ran towards one another, everyone was clapping.

Finally, a peaceful reunion. That night all of those soldiers at the wall would have had permission to shoot...and if one of them had done it...it would have been a blood bath, because everyone would have opened fire. And yet...not one of them did.

Which is the reason why we got pictures like this:

And while you did do a lot of good, you also did a lot of bullshit. ...communist built the wall, Americans say tear down that wall, get your facts straight.

funny how the wall didn't truly fall on November 9th.

The wall fell as a reaction to the vents on November 9th.

A German politician accidentally slipped up in a speech and said that the people could immediately travel in between both sides...after that people started rushing for the wall. The Stasi didn't know what to do with so many people...so they decided to just let them pass through.

And just because the Americans had the idea to tear down the wall, which was an idea playing in many people's heads (especially in west Germany), doesn't mean that it's the reason it was eventually torn.

So, no, there's no reason to thank the US.

Good thing it had nothing to do with the US. It had a lot to do with Russia.

the russians took the u.s lead, you know little

Nope, I just know the European view.

Trust me, I know the way history is taught in the US...it's basically a mass of, "We're saviors to the world."

Nov. 9 should be called "Freedom Day" and made a national holiday.

The 3rd of October (the day when the two "Germanies" were united is our national holiday. It has a lot to do with that. October 9th wasn't pocked, because Hitler choose that day years before to (I think it was that) open the first concentration camp. It basically had bad historical karma.

That truly would have been such an experience... That point when they run towards eachother... It was amazing even as a US citizen.
