We had been, up until now, just learning covers and playing some tiny little local shows for fun. People really liked what we had done with the covers and urged us to write some stuff, so here we are. I feel as if I need to preface this by saying that I am the vocalist for a metalcore band, which means I scream. Yeah, I know that most of you will stop reading right here, but hopefully some of you will read past this. I've been having trouble coming up with lyrics for a couple of reasons: 1. I can't help but compare my lyrics to those found in the music I listen to. And when I go to compare them, I find that mine are too simplistic and just don't have enough meaning in them. I never feel like they're worded as they should or that they're cryptic or deep enough. I know that I shouldn't be too concerned with this aspect, considering I am a novice at writing lyrics, but it still bothers me, knowing that my band mates will eventually be seeing these lyrics, and that I will be performing these songs on stage. My band mates have said, for the one set of lyrics that I did write, that they were very good, but I suspect that they were just humoring me because they know I'm a little self-conscious about them. 2. I have a lack of topics to write about. I'm not a very passionate person... about anything. I don't feel as if I have convictions strong enough that they're worth writing about. The lyrics for the one original we do have come from a poem that I wrote for English class this year, based off The Tempest. As lame as that sounds, I found that to be kinda helpful. I know that there's nothing that you can do, directly, to make me get over these issues, but if there's any advice that you'd be able to give, that'd be great.

Try taking your mind out of it's normal state-drink/drugs or if your not into that sort of thing, just try not sleeping CherryxBomb Posted at 10:05 pm on Jan. 1, 2009 I write lyrics and I have those same problems too. Why don't you just ask your bandmates for help in the writing process? That way they will help you with the wording and topics. I'm sure they may have some problems going on in their life that can maybe inspire you to be more passionate in your songs. Plus they will give you better feedback. Also remember that every band (as similar as some may sound) has their own unique style, including the style of lyrics. So even though it's great to find inspiration from listening to your favorite bands, just remember that you cannot have lyrics that are exactly like theirs.
