Some are just manifestations of what we've thought about during the day (and it's usually easy to tell which these are, because you can say to yourself, "Oh yes, I was thinking I wanted licorice today.  That must be why it's in the dream.") Some have actual meanings, and you can use a dream dictionary to look up the symbolism of certain details.
