My brother is probably one of the laziest "men" I know. He's 17, doesn't know how to mow the lawn (he lets me and our 52 year old Mother do it), doesn't know how to do the laundry, only showers when he goes out to play video games with our cousin, etc. And, as of right now, he's gotten just chubby enough that he's begun to develop stretchmarks on his flabby, pale arms.

His excuse?

"It's from lifting weights."
"When's the last time you lifted weights?"
"I don't know."

Okay, so you haven't lifted weights in well over a month or two...but it's what's causing you to develop stretchmarks (mind you, he's not muscular in the slightest)...not doing anything and living off of Macaroni and Cheese and Tuna Helper has nothing to do with it?... (he was so bad a few years ago that his cholesterol was too high and he had to be put on a diet that only lasted a few months)

I don't mean to nag but he's in horrible shape, even my Gram is afraid for him. He has no energy and I'm stronger than he is (even though he's a good four or five inches taller than I am). My Mom just says, "Everything has a way of working itself out." but that's complete BS. If everything worked itself out, she wouldn't be in such bad shape herself. She never bothered to correct her eating habits, either, and now she's so unhealthy that she has to take about ten pills every morning for various health problems.

My Gram and I aren't the only ones concerned, my Dad's sick of it, too. Any time anything needs done, he knows he can't get my brother to help because he's too out of shape and he whines and bitches so my 56 year old Dad has to do all the hard work or get my Mom and I to help. He's given up on fixing the problem because my Mom won't stop buying junk food so he can never get anything changed.

Just now, I tried to get my brother up to go work out with me but he's still in bed. He's spent what feels like 3/4 of the past three or four days in bed, he's always asleep. He was so bad a day or two ago that my Mom actually finally took action and told him to get the hell up because he had a guest and because it's crazy that he thinks he can sleep all day long.

I know he's not my responsibility but it feels like I have to work along with my Dad to get him going because my Mom babies him. She wouldn't even listen to my Gram so she's given up saying anything to her entirely. If this fails, I'm done, too. I'll take off for school in the Fall and when I'm done in three or four years, I'll just stay out of state and the kid can lay here and rot, I've got a life to live.

I take it he is doing bad in school?

Yeah, he's doing poorly in life in general. He hates school, doesn't want to go to college. Okay, so just get a job, right? He hates physical labor, too. He hates getting up in the morning, he hates being made to do anything. So what's left? He hates working and he hates studying.

Lifting weights and then stopping, could possibly do that. It's not really a good sign.

It does sound like you guys need to do some sort of intervention for your brother and find out why he's been acting this way.

He's been acting this way because he's ALWAYS acted this way.

When we were little, my Mom would always break us up when we were playing because "he has Asthma, now, be careful, he can't breathe right!" She'd freak out any time we did anything physical so he ended up spending most of his time playing video games. He's been playing them since he was around five years old, it's all he's ever done.

As for his eating habits...those are just the ones my Mom gave him. He's never wanted to look better or feel better, he's always been more like my Mom. I guess I got more of my Dad's attitude, thankfully.

He seems to think like her -- Everything will be okay because nothing bad ever happens and what bad DOES happen wasn't anyone's fault, it was just bad luck. He seems to think someone will always take care of him...and I refuse to be that someone, that's crazy, he could fix himself now.

He's on a train to no where.

Yeah, I know, that's why my parents are even considering leaving him the house instead of giving it to us both. I'm motivated, I want to move out of the area and find a great job after school whereas he'll be lucky if he even gets out of high school so they're counting on him basically NEVER MOVING OUT.

Tie him up and force-feed him celery.
