Goodbye everyone, I'm done with this forum. LiveWire just isn't for me. I feel obliged to at least do something before I go instead of leaving quietly, so I'm going to write about what I don't like about LiveWire and what I think is wrong with it.
First of all, I think it's a really bad idea to try to seek certain types of advice (the "serious" stuff) from non-professional strangers on the internet. You could just ask a close friend or relative to help you out, or see a guidance counselor, therapist or psychiatrist. That's what those people are there for, forums are definitely not a good substitute for such valuable sources of counsel. It's much better to seek advice from trusted individuals who know and understand your situation than from unknown strangers who honestly don't care that much.
Also, I never really saw a lot of purpose in LiveWire. I belong to a few other forums outside of this one, and they actually work for a few simple reasons:
1. COMMON INTEREST- All the other forums I belong to are for people who have the same hobbies or interests that I have. Thus, the forum members are brought together for the common goal of communicating with people who share a certain thing. LiveWire is a forum about what? Teens, you could say (although many members are above or below adolescence), but an age group isn't really the best thing to make a forum about.
2. SMALLER COMMUNITY- LiveWire is fucking huge. When I first got on I was astounded by the number of topics that came up and how many replies there were in such a short amount of time. Although this initially impressed me, I came to realize that a large forum community is actually a burden. With so many people, nobody know each other very well, and the size of LiveWire makes most topics only active for the first 15 minutes.
3. LACK OF POINT SYSTEM- Although most forums I go to have rankings based on number of replies/topics, nobody is as obsessed as LiveWire members. So many people here somehow believe that getting a high forum rank is a true achievement, so make meaningless and hastily-written posts or topics just to advance among the ranks. Because of this, the few decent, well-thought topics are drowned in stupid things like "what should I eat for breakfast", "should I clean my room today", and "here's a question that I decided to ask on this forum rather than taking 10 seconds to Google the damn answer".
I first joined LiveWire because a friend introduced it to me. I was quickly turned away from most of the topics because of the amount of trolling, useless responses, and poor presentation of a situation. I clung to the intellectual forum and a few others in hopes of getting decent topics and enriching arguments, but I soon learned that in forum arguments everyone is absolutely stubborn and substitutes rational evidence with immature insults. Thus, LiveWire offered nothing to me.
A lot of people say they go on LiveWire just because they are bored...really, there are so many better ways to spend your time- finish your homework, find a hobby, hang out with some friends, go out and kick a ball...almost anything is a better use of time.

A few last minute words of wisdom:

-Just because someone has an opinion that is different from yours doesn't mean they are ignorant. Really, this word is the most overused word on this forum.

-Religious people aren't all mindless, science-hating, irrational, stubborn fanatics, okay? Just because someone has a little bit of faith doesn't mean they can't offer a credible opinion.

-Conforming isn't a sin, just because someone agrees with a norm doesn't mean they are brain-dead sheep. I understand that individuality is important, but it shouldn't be forced upon people. It's okay to go along with popular opinion, it's not going to make you some sort of slave.

-I'm sure the vast majority of us started learning English grammar and spelling in kindergarten or first grade (unless English isn't your native language), is it really that hard to use it when you type? People like me really appreciate it when we can understand what you're typing.

-LiveWire, I'm not trying to destroy this site, I'm just saying what I think is wrong with it and what annoys me about it.

-Please don't ask me for my points.

Thanks for taking some time to read what I have to say, I'll stay on for a bit longer just to see and possibly respond to the replies.

Any recomendations on better forums?

Govteen is a great forum if your idea of a great forum is a teen forum where every mod is an angry 14-year-old girl

Another person who takes the interwebs serious.... someone needs to grow up.

 Goodbye.

Enlighten me, what is the purpose of the internet then?

First of all, I think it's a really bad idea to try to seek certain types of advice (the "serious" stuff) from non-professional strangers on the internet. Pretty fucking obvious response to this bit. What about those who don't have trusted family members or easy access to guidance counselors, therapists and psychiatrists? What about those who are uncomfortable seeking advice in person? Just leave them out in the cold because they should get over it?

There are plenty of issues raised and questions asked which are both important and common knowledge. It's not hard to distinguish between nonsense from people that "don't care" and sound advice from those who are older, more experienced, or more knowledgeable than you. If you think you can't get support from some of Livewire's more helpful members, you haven't been paying attention.

1. COMMON INTEREST ... Teens, you could say (although many members are above or below adolescence), but an age group isn't really the best thing to make a forum about.

I suppose you didn't notice the subforums wherein common interests are shared?  Also, you can list reasons till high heaven about why an age-specific forum shouldn't work but Livewire's still here, still plenty active. Obviously your issues with the system are not issues to the rest of us.

2. SMALLER COMMUNITY ... Although this initially impressed me, I came to realize that a large forum community is actually a burden. With so many people, nobody know each other very well, and the size of LiveWire makes most topics only active for the first 15 minutes.

Again, you haven't been paying attention. There are plenty of (mostly older) members who know each other quite well. Would you say a few people couldn't get to know each other simply because they're standing in a crowded room? Nonsense. And there are threads that are active for days, and days. Threads with no potential or without an interested following die out after 15 minutes. That's a good thing, not a bad.

A lot of people say they go on LiveWire just because they are bored...really, there are so many better ways to spend your time- finish your homework, find a hobby, hang out with some friends, go out and kick a ball...almost anything is a better use of time.

You're pretty arrogant to think you should be able to dictate what an appropriate use of others' time is. I doubt many livewire members don't also do those things. When one has nothing to do, Livewire is a perfectly reasonable solution if one is so inclined.

-Just because someone has an opinion that is different from yours doesn't mean they are ignorant. Really, this word is the most overused word on this forum.

Welcome to the debate of laypeople. This is not a livewire specific issue, as you should know if you've ever watched an argument or diatribe on American TV news.  Next two of your paragraphs, same response.

snowfish Posted at 11:52 am on Aug. 27, 2008
yeah, you pretty much saw everything wrong with this site. But if you don't take it seriously and stick around for the lulz, it's somewhat less tragic.
