let me tell you something right now: by not seeing the doctor, your not only hurting yourself (which, i know you don't care about), but you're also hurting the people closest to you who have to live with you every day.

do i sound a bit bitter? yes. why? because the one person who means the most to me is severely depressed. it took me basically making an ultimatum, and months for him to see a doctor. it's a long, hard road, and i hate it everyday. i despise his disease - one that i myself fought a solid battle with in my mid-teen years - and sometimes it makes me hate him for what it does to him. (my father has also been depressed for about 10 years. i get this disease way better than i wish i did.)

self medicating? i don't agree. go to the fucking doctor. he might suggest you try st john's wort, but he'll know the dosage that might be effective. and if that doesn't work, he can get you on something else. more people are on anti-depressants than aren't these days, don't be ashamed. and you obviously want to heal.

and as for Blank black's post; it is not always necessary to talk to someone (like a shrink). Although for many people it is effective, some people actually can't. They just can't open up, which causes more stress.

Anyway, sorry I just went off on a tangent, but please consider some of what I just wrote.

I don't like doctors...so i would rather not.
If you feel depressed, St Johns Wort will not work on its own. You need to talk to someone.

It depends how severe your case is. They tried it out on me when I was really depressed and I didn't even feel a difference... but then again I was pretty severe and suicidal. I know people it's worked on.

St Johns Wort is only effective in my opinion on milder depressions. Always consult with your doctor before self medicating.

I totally support the idea of taking what your doctor prescribes. Those SSRI's and the occasional MAOI work wonders on the brain
