Don't be fool by the facade those islands of modernization provide, india is still a developing country way behind china and even chinese students are dying to be educated in the western system. as for this girl who has problems, your problems are overrated for two reasons: 1) your invitation to MIT does not mean acceptance but your sob story could help, again, you stated that you are poor beyond poverty itself and most schools feel that education is the only way for some one to better themselves. Putting these two things together means for you that when you submit your application you include a letter so the admissions committee can read and feel bad for yourself. As for the second thing, not going to MIT won't mean the end of the world for you, any undergrad engineering program is basically the same, do well in undergrad, spread your wings, and apply for MIT grad school. Oh, also, you should not make your boyfriend buy stuff. Her parents basically hate her (or what it seems) she never goes out, never drinks never done drugs but for some reason her parents just put all the blame on her for doing something shes not responsible for. (Her dad even makes her pay his bills because he doesnt know how) So here's the situation. She got this invitation to go visit MIT and her parents wont fill out the paper that they're okay to let her go. Her parents always put her down saying shes going no where in life shes ugly she'll never have anyone never go to college etc. But shes incredibly smart and she cant really pay to go since the family has no money nor would they be willing to spend it on her. What does she do? Not taking this MIT invitation may ruin her chances of getting in all thanks to her parents so... help?

How did that go, did she/you end up going to the thing? If you missed something important, don't be afraid to approach MIT staff directly and explain the situation and ask for info/support/updates. Genuine dedication is always welcome at any uni, I've found. He is right, my parents are a nightmare. I just want to get a good education. To show you how naive my mother is about all this ill give you all an example: she says i should go to community college, get a "small" career like photography *wth* or as a hair stylist *huh* and then get money, and then go to a big college, and do what i wanna do. what a waste of time. i want to major in engineering. that's my parents for you. she tells me to not expect scholarships, since she thinks ill have to resort to community college anyway. i mean the least they can do is support me in all of this. i never ask for anything. i mean i know they have money problems. for example i need clothes, havent even gotten anything new in a year. my boyfrined helps me though. he sees what i have to go trhough and he gives me whatever he can. i just want  a good education and to be succesful. that's it. nothing else. im not asking them for money, or anything, just their support. oallelsefailo Posted at 1:14 pm on May 26, 2008 Quote: from sotayuki at 1:08 pm on May 26, 2008 ever hear of emansapation???
