I'm writing a Human Factors (don't ask) paper about my LG Chocolate cell phone. We basically have to go over key concepts we've discussed in class such as affordances, constraints, feedback, etc. And I'm kind of wondering...should I go for humor? I was thinking of writing something like...

"I, myself, am unable to do more than place or receive calls and send/receive the occasional text message due to...financial constraints (Dad)."

I was also thinking of cracking a joke about how my cell phone is one of the few things I won't forget to bring to class (which would lead everyone to believe it's because I'm a "typical girl" when, in reality, it's because I use it instead of a watch and very rarely ever call anyone and don't text).

The Prof is pretty laid back and funny, himself, but I've never actually written a paper that might be considered amusing (at least to myself), I've always taken that stuff out after writing it. Think I should just do it?

Be humorous.

I'd do it. If it turns out badly, it probably won't affect your grade too much anyway.

Well, I was going to make it both funny and serious. All I was going to do was make it a little amusing while sticking to the topic at hand.

Why not write a funny one and a serious one? Then give them both to your prof just in case the funny one doesn't go down well you can claim it was just a joke.

You never know if you don't try. Doing something new takes out the monotony of the task, especially when your teacher keeps having to grade the same thing over and over again.

If you HONESTLY think that you're funny and people appreciate your humour then go for it, but otherwise i would play it safe.

I don't know if I am or not but it amuses me.

And I can crack people up when I loosen up, I guess I just have low self-esteem. Someone says or does something and I think of something funny to say and hold back. The few times I've let go, I've made people laugh so it's not like I'm awful although I'm sure I'm nowhere near being the funniest person around.

Bah go conquer your self esteem and show you're funny :) sure it's only a paper anyway

I say go for it, make your paper stand out some among the monotonous tone of the other students papers.

I would go for the funny.  I mean, I love cracking jokes even in the most serious of papers.  Most of my teachers don't mind it and give me extra marks for creativity.  Woot.
