Depending on the school and the level of play it might be very difficult to join the team.  Your first project would be to speak to the coach.  Make sure you understand the team, it's rankings and the other schools in the league and ask if you can speak to the coach in person or  by phone. Next, ask if you can attend one of the practices.  This should give you a feel as to whether or not your skills match the teams.  Follow up with the coach, thanking them for letting you visit, and see how you can try out for the following season.
