See, my college has "learning communities" which are basically groups of people in the same major or with similar interests who live and take classes together. I want to be in the nursing learning community, but I want to live with my friend who's a bio major. Earlier in the year, we discussed that this was a problem, but she said that she looked into it and we could room together in the learning community if it was okay with her (which it is). Well there was a post on the college's website for the class of 2013 saying we should hear our roommates by mid July, and I asked the question of how certain it was that we would get our requested roommate. So, I went back to check to see if there was a response, and there was: I notice that your requested roommate is not in Nursing, therefore, not in the Nursing learning community. You and she should talk about what is more important for both of you -- you have options. You can request to live together in another location (and Res Life makes every effort to honor your reciprocal request to live together), but you would not necessarily be living near the nursing students who decided to reside with each other. Ugh! So now I have to find out which is true...and if what I quoted is true, then I've got a major problem. I feel equally strongly about being in the learning community and rooming with my friend. I chose the way I did because I thought I could have the best of both worlds. I don't know what I'll do if I have to choose one over the other. I mean, there are definite pros and cons to both...but seriously? I've met a bunch of nursing students, and I could see myself rooming with a couple of them so I guess if I chose that it wouldn't be all bad, but rooming with my friend would be so much better because I know and love her and we work together so well!   If you were in my situation, what would you do? What do you think I should do? Thanks!

Replies SingDanceRunLife Posted at 7:14 pm on June 19, 2009 If for some reason you don't enjoy it, you could always move in with your friend for the next school year. See, that's the thing...if for some reason I don't enjoy it, I'm stuck there all year...and learning communities are freshman only, and one you're in, then that's it. At least when you just have a normal roommate you can switch after the first semester. newmie66 Posted at 5:25 pm on June 19, 2009 Since you've known your friend for so many years already, why not give the learning community a try? You might find that you really like it and I think it will help you excel in your studies. If for some reason you don't enjoy it, you could always move in with your friend for the next school year. I thought a designated dorm was good enough. Why's it so important to them for people with the same major to room together? that's kinda weird. We've spent a ridiculous amount of time together doing theater and stuff, and doing that is like living together. I lived in a learning community with my best friend (we have diff majors) and they constantly get direct help and attention from their department. You might not like living with your friend anyway. I hated living with mine. I also want to room with my friend who isn't a nursing student. I was told yesterday that I can't do that even though a couple months ago we were told we could. If that's the case, should I live with my friend or in the learning community? Honestly, my school is known for nursing, so basically all the freshman girls who took nursing were together in the freshman dorms, but all they did was bitch about it.
