He seems to get the idea that he has to handle it alone, but being in a part of a relationship means sharing both pain and happiness. He probably doesn't want to involve you and worry you, so he's chosen to disclose information from you. If you really do care about him, let him know that there's no reason why he should shoulder the burden by himself. If he shares that weight, the recovery process will be quicker. It was actually something I had said.
