I've been trying to figure out if I'm doing well, but it's been drilled into me by my dad to save as much as I can at a young age, invest properly (dividends from mutual funds/large cap stocks/index funds...generating little income in the short term, but growth with low risk), and iunno.
Currently I save 10% of my 2 week paycheck in a 401k (about 2k), and put 400 extra away into investments each month. I just throw the rest into other places.
So...how about all of you? Do you even think about these things or are you all just smokin' joints and talking about lesbians that are "hot"
My starting salary is 44k...
what's the mean of this sentence
I just paid off my car title last month, so February was my first full month not paying it (I was paying $1000/month to pay it off, so essentially it feels like I got a $1000/month raise). I recently started culinary school though - 1 year program $17k. I have a few thousand in some random bank account that I share with my mom (which she's always badgering me to put more money into, but since it's in both of our names and I do not review the monthly statements I'm weary).
Although I certainly make more than I earn, I don't do extremely well on the savings front.
I get around $1,000 every three months so my income would be around $3,500-5,000 a year. I need to seriously try to put some money away this time. I'm horrible with money. v.v It may possibly be the death of me. I need to seriously get a job.
I currently have ~900. That at least will be gone in July.
I was pleased yesterday though. I lost my no claims this year but it's cheaper than I thought it would be
I'm shit at saving. My mom always used to say money burns a hole in my pocket. (Gee, thanks for the positive affirmations.)
I want to save half my paycheck for long term savings, and then part of the rest for shorter term goals. I haven't started yet.
I like focusing on high dividend stocks, it's low risk, middle-of-the-road reward in the short run, but as it grows, those last few doubles will help.
I like the job, hate the way the company structures itself, so I have to get out eventually. I am driven, but things don't seem to add up right now. I've saved a lot, and the people I'm around tell me that I'm actually saving too much and being too strict with my spending, but I don't see that...

Yeah, I would listen to your dad. My uncle, the only person in my family to have graduated from college, also pretty much tells me the same thing:
Save as much as you can. Read the newspaper for financial tips. Invest in low-risk stock
Though I am a bit confused as to how your monthly expenses range from $800-$1500 when you don't have to pay for housing expenses. My monthly expenses usually max at $1800 and I have to pay rent =\.

I have large expenses even with living at home, but still, I feel like you guys are way ahead. Ah, cool. Well at least that sounds more interesting/exciting than a jr. software "engineer." I was thrown off by your ~$2k/2 weeks. I only make $4.4k net a month. So somehow, the net difference isn't even remarkable. Regardless, you seem driven. I'm sure you'll rise through the ranks or invest your money in such a way that you get decent returns.

I know it's high, but I have expense on average of 800 - 1500 a month...depends on the month. So, after taking out the money for my 401k, taxes and individual investments, I'm left with just netting MAYBE 2k a month, but mostly it works out to like 1.8k or slightly less.

I don;t need to prove myself i know what im doing, listening to people who have no idea what they are talking about for too long and it sent me on the wrong path. What you say usually seems over the top. Almost unbelievable. I'm not saying that you have to prove yourself. I don't really care. If you really are doing that well for yourself, holy shit. Congrats, you won at life.
