They tend to be like "Yo man" or "Dude".....whether they know the person well or not.  Is this an unwritten rule or respect or something? It's just the current expression among a certain segment of our society. Like all such things, these expressions come and go. I guess you just pick it up depending on the environment you live and are involved it. I always say it, man and dude most frequently and a few other inside joke type things to close friends.
