Today during 3rd period, I was called to the guidance office, and my counselor told me that I was one of the students selected to be considered for this program at UNC-Chapel Hill, and I could also be considered for a scholarship as well.  The program lasts 3 days and 2 nights, and I would stay on the campus, and get a taste of college life.

Well, that was all fine and dandy with me!  When I got to 4th period, I asked my friends if any of them were offered the same thing, and they informed me that it was only open to minorities.

That pissed me off.  My guidance counselor told me that I was considered because of my classes and my GPA, not because I'm black, and my classes, and my GPA.  I really don't want to do it, but they're all like, "Money for college is money for college.  Don't let your pride get in the way of that. You got chosen because you're smart too."

I want to be chosen just because of my ability, and I don't want my race to have anything to do with it.

I hate that too for you.  I don't think you declining it would make anything change though.  So I would at least try to get it.

I disagree with the concept but I would take it anyway.

Hmmm... if I were you, if you're this concerned about it, then I highly recommend talking with your guidance counselor about it. I know you're not really going for the minority title and all, but sometimes it's worth milking the government for it's worth. College can be an extremely expensive thing and if you can get away with a few more ways to obtain scholarships and grants, why not? I mean, it's different when you're getting a job and you're told the only reason why you were given the job was because it filled the minority quota for the company.

I would just pick my battles and go with the flow. But if you think you can afford the college tuition without getting these sort of scholarships and such... then just ignore me. Otherwise, I would give it some thought at least.

What exactly is this program you're talking about? Have you done research on this other than just talking with your friends about it?

I think it's called Operation Uplift or whatever.  My counselor didn't give me any literature on it or anything, she just took down my phone number and e-mail address.

I asked some other people, and somehow everyone else knew that it was a minority thing.  She failed to mention that with me.

why are you pissed? theres lots of programs and scholarships like these for people who are legacies,  in the army, and so forth. college is expensive these days and would be ridiciously more expensive once you're in college so i would seize every opportunity you get.

Even if you did get picked based on your race does that suck so bad? You have an amazing opportunity and you should be proud of yourself and yes, you deserve it because regardless of what you want to believe race does get in the way of some things and if it just happens to work in your favor why would you turn it down?

Well that happens were I am too.  They asked me if I wanted to go to college I said no.  None of my other friends got asked it.  They also said because I am Hispanic.
