I am moving out in about a month and a half to my dorm room in UVa.  I know the basic things to bring (bedsheets, microwave, fridge, etc.) but what are somethings that are often overlooked and forgotten??

You can buy a pot/kettle. I've been told that they come in very useful especially when you're living off KD. You plug it in and its a pot and you can heat your food in it. Can be very helpful.

Shower shoes.
Popcorn (great for movie nights, a fantastic conversation starter).

    Shower shoes?

    Popcorn as a conversation starter?

Wow. They sure do things differently in CA!

Anytime anyone on the floor made popcorn we were all immediately in their room trying to grab some, so it was nice at gathering everyone around, thus...conversations would start.

And you've never heard of using shower shoes in communal showers? Ew.

You can't get AIDS from communal showers so protection seems like a waste of money.

Ever heard of MRSA or Staph infections? You will get those easily in communal showers. Staph broke out in one of the dorms where none of them used shower shoes, and one of my guy friends contracted MRSA, he also never wore shower shoes.

I don't know what MRSA is but it doesn't sound like AIDS.

Shower shoes seem like such a waste of money.

You buy a pair of flip flops for 3 freaking dollars. That certainly costs a lot less than the doctor bills and pills you have to take if you contract either MRSA or Staph.

Shower shoes are a good idea because the public restrooms are gross.

Bring lots of paper towels/toilet paper.  Don't forget your phone charger!  Lots of shampoo and conditioner.

Shower shoes, shower caddy, cleaning supplies, food, entertainment, a cooler for your laptop (if you have one), a phone (not JUST a cell phone), silverware and dishes...a lot of "home" items like that.

If you have a roommate, you'll definitely want to talk to her/him so that you don't get doubles of the big things.

A broom.

Also, if I were you I'd invest in a nice tempurpedic mattress pad(doesn't need to be name brand, Target makes one too), they can run between 20 and 30 dollars, and they make a HELL of a difference to the mattress. Dorm beds are usually really shitty, just sayin.

You can never have too many sharp knives. Nowhere seems to have enough. They seem to get stolen a lot.
