I was wondering if it would be a good or bad idea to have the Beatles as a theme for the hallway. I'm afraid that The Beatles it too specific, and that not everyone will like them.  Should I be more broad like "Rock and Roll music" or decades like the 50s or 60s?

I do not know a lot about their songs, but you could make door nametags in the shape of yellow submarines and cool stuff from their songs! There are so many songs and The Beatles really is such a huge theme that there is plenty you could do for it! I mean, after all, it's not just your hall. ;) While they're not responsible for it, they have to live in it. And if they don't like it, they're going to show for it. Not everybody wants to live in the 60's, nor love the music. You should get everyone to personalise a section of the wall, make it a communal thing. That way it is fair and equal.
