I think that most probably start because of peer pressure and the thought that it makes you cool in other peoples eyes but eventually it becomes an addiction. They make it part of their every day lives and find it little harder each day to stop. Thats when the real problem starts.

wow... some of you people are really sad.

If you're drinking or using to forget or to 'feel better' then I pitty you. also, seek help because that's the beginings of an addiction and years of future therapy/parole hearings.

If you're going to use any of that, do it socially. Maybe to loosen up a bit, or admit to yourself that you enjoy an altered state of mind once in a while. I drink socially because I like the taste of some things (there's a 14 year old scotch that I would kill for!), and other times because it's the sociable thing to do. I tend to stop before I reach the point of drunkeness (it's good to know your tollerance) because I don't enjoy being drunk. Well... I don't enjoy the hangovers... which I rarely ever have because I just stay up while drunk and drink water until I'm rehydrated enough to go to bed (side effects include getting up to pee every few hours). The main thing is... I don't want to be "that guy" that no one likes because they get drunk all the time and then need to be taken care of. And if you think you get drunk but people still like you... well, they don't. Unless they too are drunk, in which case they don't know any better.

At best, people pitty drunks. At worst, they loathe them. It's not cute, it's not cool, so know your tollerance and be prepared to look after yourself. the world is full of people who don't care and last year I quickly stopped caring after having to litterally fix up drunks who were bleeding, puking, and in one case seizing because the moron picked up a random drink that was laced. That was a fun 5 hours in the hospital. Fortunately the doctor was as impressed as I was, so I think my friend learned his lesson.

As for drugs... depends what you do. a little weed... who cares? Honestly, it's cheaper than going to a bar, you can share it with your friends, things seem more interesting (depending on what you're doing or notice) and you don't have to worry about a hangover. Also, if you get a vaporizer you don't even have to do it outside to avoid the smell in your room. Well, my vaporizer manages anyway...

Alcohol for the win, i drink because i enjoy it. I like the taste and the natural effect it has to draw people together.

Recreational mainly. It's something I can quit easily though; I would never get myself into something that is habit forming in any way.

Alcohol isnt such a bad thing, and I would never do drugs, except for maybe pot.

Alcohol is a drug, and it is one of the more dangerous drugs.  It is easier to overdose on alcohol than it is to overdose on most illicit substances.

It helps me forget my problems and loosen and not worry about shit for awhile.

To have fun, to feel closer to certain people, for spiritual reasons, and for the experience.  I won't lie drugs have changed me, but as far as I'm concerned its been for the better.  I have a greater understanding of life, I am more comfortable and happier around people, and I enjoy life as a whole much more even when I am not high or intoxicated.

It's fun and I'll do what I want.
