The substance in question here are "Legal Highs"/"Party Pills" -- stimulant products that can be found on places like EVERYBODYDOESIT.COM. More specifically, the product of my concern is "Summer Daze"

Disclaimer (lol): It's a long post so I separated my post into sections -- 1.) Background, 2.) When things started to change 3.) When things did change, 4.) Why I prefer these to alcohol, 5.) Problem/Main Point

So if you don't have time, skim at least. If you do have time, please read, everything I wrote has a purpose -- puts the situation in context. Thanks

1.) BACKGROUND

I'm a 20 year old male, currently coming to the end of my Sophomore year in college

I started drinking when I was 16, but hardly anything. Freshmen year first year in college brought about big parties every weekend. However, as I entered the Spring Semester, and later Sophmore Year, my drinking has declined considerably. The excitement is gone - it's not "new" any more. Instead of "Needing" to party every weekend, I now do other things with friends - movie, dinner, etc. Still drink occasionally, obviously, but nothing major

2.) WHEN THINGS STARTED TO CHANGE

However, April last year (2007) I had two dental procedure (Gum Graft followed by Wisdom Teeth). I got Oxycodone for the Graft, and Vicodin for the Teeth. Needed it for pain, but loved the feeling it gave me, so I used the remaining prescription recreationally of both. Gave me pure bliss.

3.) WHEN THINGS DO CHANGE

Enter Summer of 2007. Boredom settles in. Can't legally drinki yet, and since I'm in Suburbia, it's hard to even attend simple firend house parties (due to driving)

So I looked around the internet for some time, and in late June I stumbled across "Legal Highs" aka "Party Pills", which arent popular here in the US, but are in Europe (esp England), and New Zealand, thanks to EveryOneDoesIt.com

**Side Note: I've never done illegals, and never will (Consequences are too great: Shady, possible laced pills, jail time/fine -- just not worth it). The only illegal I've ever been interested in trying, though, is MDMA(XTC). It just sounds amazing. The legals I'm using attemt to mimick the effects.**

After experimentation and new products being released every couple weeks, I have found my love, "Summer Daze" I love it so much I'm not getting worried. It gives me MONUMENTAL music appreciation, which puts me in a state of blissful euphoria.

I don't use these things excessively (mainly on the weekend: Thurs-Sat) due to them being expensive and I have classes, etc. (My rational: As long as it's in moderation, it's fine. And since its *INSTEAD* of drinking and not *ADDITION TO* I see no overall problem)

4.) WHY I PREFER THESE TO ALCOHOL

These pills are a euphoric stimulant, giving you energy and boosting your mood. There for it's a clear headed "high"

While alcohol you feel slow and sloppy. If you drink a little bit too much, you can say and do things you'll regret. If you drink even more, you'll black out and pass out. And of course, worst case scenario with alcohol is coma and/or death. -- You don't get any of that with these "Party Pills" --> You know what you're doing, you know where you are etc

So at least in the short term (mainy during usage) these legals are DEFINITELY safer. And I find the feeling more enjoyable than alcohol

5.) THE PROBLEM/MAIN POINT

I ordered 4 packs. Each pack contains two pills, thus 8 pills in total for a whooping $70,

I kept telling myself: "Use 1-2 pills per weekend, no more"

However, it's now Saturday night, and I've done 4 pills over the last 3 days

It's not excessive or bad cos I'm functionally fine during the day etc (ie not interferring with my life)

But this isn't the first time I've mentally set limits on how much I'll take of these on a given weekend, only to break it.

I know the easy answer is: "Don't buy them anymore" Problem solved, yes.

I could stop if I wanted to (I'm not addicted) But I want to continue using them, but just in a more responsible and economical way. How would you suggest I go about doing this?

I tend to be a very cautious, diligent, rational person. That's why this stands out for me so drastically.....

first of all, those pills are expensive.  Second, doing 2-4 pills every weekend is not controlling the substance, you seriously have an addiction problem to the pills.  If you really have control to the pills you would be doing 1-2 every 1 or 2 months or so.  So you gotta admit that you have a problem and try to talk to your friend about it and they can help you through it.

personally, whenever i hear "I could stop if I wanted to" i consider it a red flag. i've heard alcoholics say it many a time...

it sounds as though you're just lying to yourself.  you tell yourself that you'll limit the amount you take but don't, you say you can stop any time but you want to keep using them...  just stop buying them and solve the problem all together (as you said)
