I was talking with a friend of mine who is getting ready to leave for college within the next week and she realized she had no idea what to take with her.  It made me realize that some freshmen will be in the same situation.  So here goes;

Here's a list* of things you should consider bringing;
- Alarm clock
- Backpack
- Bedspread, pillow, and mattress pad (most schools use the x-long twin size mattresses so you would have to buy special sheets which can be found at Wal-Marts, K-Marts, Targets, and other stores- just ask a sales associate about it and they could help you out)
- Blankets and sheets
- Clothes hangers
- Comfortable walking shoes
- Computer disks (3.5 floppy, CD-RW, and/or Zip disk-- but most people use jumpdrives anymore) and printer paper
- Desk lamp
- Dust rag, dust spray
- First aid kit (you can buy one already packed for you or you can just create one yourself)
- Laundry supplies (liquid detergent, softener, stain treatment, and a basket/bag, drying rack-- whatever you feel you'll need)
- Office supplies (notebooks, pens, pencils, tape, stapler, paper clips, scissors, etc)
- Raincoat / umbrella (recommend two-one to have and one to lose)
- Rolls of quarters (for laundry)
- Shower bucket (to carry your shower supplies)
- Shower shoes
- Telephone and/or answering machine (some schools prefer a certain frequency due to wireless internet, so check with your school on this to avoid problems)
- Towels and washcloths
- Hygiene accessories (hairdryer, toothbrush, toothpaste, brush/comb, pads/tampons, etc)
- Batteries
- Flashlight/Radio (for emergencies)
- Water filter (a lot cheaper to get than buying bottles)
- Kitchen needs (plates, cups, utensils, can/bottle opener, chip clips, etc)
- Storage boxes (under the bed storage is really nice)
- Waste basket (some schools already provide one)
-  Adhesive hooks, tacky adhesive, and mounting tape (bottle of Goo-Gone just in case you want to remove them in the future)
- Bulletin/dry erase board with supplies
- Toolkit with basic tools
-  Phone cord/Ethernet cord for computer (some schools already provide these)
- surge protector and/or extension cords
- bicycle and equipment to go with it (emergency tire repair kit, small bike toolkit, helmet, bike lock, etc)

Also, if you plan to live with a roommate to try your best to communicate with them on what things to bring and to avoid bringing two of the same thing (like TVs, box fans, computers, etc).

Try your best not to bring everything you own or a lot of clothes.  Just make sure you have about 2-3 weeks worth of clothes if anything. Make sure it's a wide variety of different sorts; pjs, dress, casual, warm weather, cold weather, etc.

*Used Ohio University's list of suggested items to bring as example with some editing.

If you are a freshman than you are probably in a dorm. In my experience getting a light is definitely neccessary because dorm room lighting sucks for doin homework it is normally awful lighting. Also, a battery charger for your computer is ABSOLUTELY neccessary, you end up taking your computer with you everywhere and you are going to need to keep it charged. Outlets are found everywhere. Fridges and stuff are nice especially if you want to just have cereal in the morning and get on with the day. I never had enough hangers, so bring more than you think you need. and bring a lock!! if you go to the gym a lot or a few times a day, it is really nice to lock your stuff up there and just bring a backpack with you to campus. my advice, stay on campus once you arrive in the morning, do work between classes in the library and go to the gym, get a routine and follow it for the first couple of weeks, it will make you feel a lot less stressed and much healthier! plus, most dining hall food sucks so this way you are combatting the freshman 15.

wow, there are some good lists up there. I just brought a few things with me when I started. The best thing is to wait to see what you're really going to need and then buy it cheap from other college students.

Hm, will $300-400 cover it?

Well, that depends on what you get from your relatives (mine gave me bedsheets and miscellaneous crap), where you get it from, and what you get.

I would imagine $300-400 would do it though.

Living on campus:

Things to bring with you:

Sheets, twin size
Clothes to last you at least a month
Shoes/Socks/Sandals
Toiletries (toothbrush, medicines, toothpaste, soap, shampoo, brush, pads *if you're a girl, or tampons*, towel/washcloth...etc)
Bedding (Pillow, stuffed animals...)
School supplies
Lighting (Lamps)
Accessories for walls
And whatever else they don't provide. My dorm comes with a couch, desk, bed, dresser, nightstand, closet, sink, shower/tub, etc.

Ok here's a story for you: I'm a freshman at Georgian Court University in NJ, and one of the faculty members in charge of room assignments told me this story: This lady came with her daughter to move into a dorm, and she had 5-6 van loads of stuff. She hired an interior decorator/designer, and she bought decorations and supplies for both her daughter and her room mate. She never met the room-mate, never spoke to her before, but showed up with all this stuff for her. The girl ended up creeped out and had to switch rooms.

I take students in America don't use/have cell phones.  In NZ they are cheaper than landlines and pay phones.  Other than that these lists seem extensive.  Are your dorm rooms big or something?  Ours are tiny
