Lets say that one day you woke up in a room with nothing but a black button, and a man. The man tells you he will give you $10,000,000 to push it. Catch is, if you push it, someone, somewhere will die. You try to leave but the door is locked, but the man has the key and will give it to you, but you leave with nothing.  Do you push it?

Oh shit, wasn't paying attention, you're the OP haha! Sorry, I was nitpicking assuming you wouldn't know what the OP was technically thinking, but I guess you probably would since you are him!
MushroomSatsujin Posted at 9:13 am on Sep. 5, 2008
Well sorry for not clarifying.

I wouldn't push it, the guy hasn't specified whether there's any bias or catch to who dies when you push that button. It might be your best friend or someone in your family, or as Forever Angel said, it might be you.
But the odds are over 6 billion to one. ITs just some random person.

He didn't say that, he just said "someone, somewhere", no mention of odds, if it's random or if you might happen to know this 'someone, somewhere'.

Someone, somewhere meaning someone in the world will die. It will be completely random. It MIGHT be you, but as I said, the odds are over 6billion to 1

That's conjecture, not what the OP says, but granted, the tone of the post implies the odds are out of the 6 billion people on the Earth, in which case, I'd consider (just consider) pushing it with the intention of using the money to save more lives than one.

Fuck yeah I'd push it.

Edit: I'd push it for $10.

exceedinglyrare Posted at 8:18 am on Sep. 5, 2008
Oh, it's not that I actually don't know what to do with that money. I'm just not interested in having that much money entrusted to me, for any reason, much less because I was selfish enough to kill someone for it.

My point still stands that there are much better ways to make $10,000,000. Perhaps not easier, but can you really say that knowing you've caused someone's death is easy?

I've nothing to lose by not pushing it. *shrug* There are better ways to get $10,000. Like having a job.

you forgot three zeros

Even so. There are better ways to even get $10,000,000 that don't require loss of life; besides which, $10,000,000...or even half of that...is way more money than I'd know what to do with, never mind the taxes on that kind of lump sum of cash.

1. Do you really think this task would be an on the books sort of deal? Do you really think the government would have any idea that was going on? You wouldn't be taxed on it, it would be cash or in some cayman/swiss bank account.

2. refer to my post if you don't know what to do with that money.

I wouldn't press it. A life is worth more then any amount of money. I mean what is money, after all, but paper? It will go out of value in time. But this is a real person, real as you, with real aspirations and real goals and real thoughts. How can you kill somebody for the money?

Think about it this way.

If you press it, you now have 10,000,000 dollars to do whatever you want with. I'd keep probably 5 million to myself and use the rest to help poor people [I wouldn't give to charity, those things don't do anything, I'd just go around and give a bunch of poor people like 10,000 bucks.

I think helping out 500 people's lives is worth losing one I don't know... assuming I didn't know the person

3 people die per second. It is natural. The world is overpopulated anyway...

So how is this at all different from shooting someone in the head from five feet away based on your reasoning?

Alabamarama Posted at 12:17 am on Sep. 5, 2008
I would leave. It's not my place to decide it's time for someone to die, and I would just feel guilty about taking the money. Well, actually, I dunno. I might take the money and then give it to charities, to save people and make up for the one I killed. I dunno, it's kinda god-complexish.
